Risk & Portfolio Intermediate

Correlation

The degree to which two assets' returns move together, from +1 (in lockstep) to -1 (opposite). Low or negative correlation is what makes diversification work, and rising correlation in a crisis is why diversification fails when it is most needed. A correlation breakdown between a position and its hedge is a listed thesis-invalidation trigger in the OHC trade memo.
