Asset-backed security

Also known as ABS

A security whose payments come from a pool of underlying loans or receivables rather than from a single issuer's balance sheet. Investors earn from the cash flows of the pool, which is why ABS analysis is really cash-flow and default analysis. In theory any asset that generates cash flow can be securitised.
