Volatility Intermediate

Implied volatility

Also known as IV

The volatility the market is pricing into an option, reverse-engineered from its market price using a model such as Black-Scholes. It is forward-looking: it reflects what participants expect, not what has happened. High IV favours selling strategies, low IV favours buying — the single most useful rule in structure selection.
