Risk & Portfolio Intermediate

Drawdown

Also known as Maximum drawdown

The decline from a portfolio's peak value to its subsequent trough, expressed as a percentage. It measures the depth of the pain, and maximum drawdown is the number that determines whether a strategy is survivable in practice as well as on paper. Recovery is asymmetric: a 50% drawdown needs a 100% gain to get back.
