Capital structure

Also known as Capital stack

The full stack of a company's debt and equity obligations, ordered by claim priority — senior debt at the top, common equity at the bottom. Moving down the stack means more risk, higher cost of capital and lower priority in a bankruptcy. Knowing where an instrument sits tells you most of what you need about its risk.
